Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)
ACBR is organizing Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) of 14 weeks duration to impart practical training in various newly emerging research techniques in the multi-disciplinary areas of biotechnology. The purpose of organizing the courses is to reorient the existing manpower within a short period of time to meet the immediate requirement of expanding R&D activities in biotechnology within the country. The ACBR identifies areas for training as well as universities and other research institutions where high expertise and adequate infrastructure exist for organizing these courses. Mid-career scientists having permanent positions in the institutes are selected on sponsorship basis to ensure that necessary facilities are provided to them by their host institutions to work further in their area of training.
Summer Undergraduate Research program (SURP) is designed to enable college students with a strong interest in Biology/Chemistry to experience Laboratory Research from may to August every year. SURP trainees undergo a sound theoretical and quality analytical training in the various fields of bio-medical science. The trainees choose a specific area of research and training in consultation with faculty and postdoctoral fellows. Motivational training is also provided to enhance their level of achievements, quality orientation and productivity.
All SURP students also participate in weekly journal club organized and lead by graduate students and they finish the program by writing a project report and dissertation, that describe their work and research experience. The students (SURPs) are supposed to attend two to three lectures in the morning from 9.00 a.m. onwards and then join the labs for their project work everyday. Students are required to submit a detailed Research project report at the end of the program, followed by presentation of their work and viva voce examination. During the program, students are also taken to various Biotechnology Research Centres and Industries such as Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu, Indian Oil Co-operation, Research & Development Center, Indian Institute of Petroleum, Ranbaxy Research Laboratories and other Research Institutes. This is the first such course being started by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Center for Biomedical Research at the University of Delhi.
Application for training under SURP should be sent to the Director, ACBR on plain paper so that it reaches on or before April 15th every year
The outstanding Students will be offered a Scholarship/Fellowship of Rs 2,500/- on completion of SURP.
Science Outreach Program (SOP)
Science Outreach Program (SOP) is designed to enable college students with a strong interest in Biology/Chemistry to experience Laboratory Research from May to August every year. Students are provided financial assistance by ACBR and host Institute to carry out research in different fields at leading Research Institutes and Universities in India and abroad. Some of the Research Centers like Indian Oil Corporation, Ranbaxy research laboratories, Guru Nanak Dev University have their keen desire to train other students. Selected students are matched according to their stated field of interest with Faculty and Postdocs, who volunteer to supervise them and the mentors design individualized summer project for their students.
Training Program for Industrial R&D Personnel
A program was formulated during the year 1997. The objective of the program is to motivate industrial houses so that their R&D personnel can get exposure to drug discovery and biomedical sciences. One such course will be conducted during December 1999.
Popular Lectures by Eminent Scientists
The objective of the program is to organize popular lectures by eminent scientists in the field of biomedical Sciences in identified priority areas from leading institutions in the country. The institutions and priority areas are identified for the year. The institutions are requested to identify two experts from within and one expert from outside, all three being from within country for organizing three lectures every year. School/College/university students from nearby regions and also members of the general public are invited to attend the lectures. About sixty lectures have so far been conducted under the scheme by the eminent Professors from all over the world. Some of them are: Prof. Rolf Gleiter, Germany; Prof. Ed. Wasserman, Prof. Ronald Breslow, Prof. Ved Nanda, Dr. A. K. Ganguly, Prof. Sat Ahuja, Prof. Ned D. Heindel, Dr. N.P. Singh, Dr. Harish Joshi, Prof. Brij B. Saxena and Prof. Keith M. Pannell from USA; Prof. Ahmed A. Azad, Australia; Prof. Daniel M. Brown, UK; Dr. H.S. Sharma, Netherlands; Prof. Rene Gree,France; Prof. B. Sarkar, Prof. M. Sayer from Canada; Dr. D.S. Bhakuni, Prof. Pradeep Seth, Prof. Indira Nath, Prof. K. Balasubramanian, Prof. Seyed E. Hasnain, Prof. G.P. Talwar, Dr. A. Venkateswarlu, Prof. V.S. Chauhan, Prof. N. Appajirao, Prof. Sukh Dev, Prof. P.M. Bhargava, Prof. M.S. Kanungo, Prof. Ashish Dutta, Dr. T.S.R. Prasada Rao, Dr. J.M. Khanna, Dr. V.P. Kamboj, Prof. P. Balram, Dr. Manju Sharma, Dr. S.R. Ramachandran, Dr. A.V. Rama Rao and Dr. G. Thyagarajan from India.
Publications in Biomedical Sciences
The objective of the scheme is to prepare publications in the field of Biomedical Sciences in the form of monographs (scientific and popular), supplement in science magazines, articles in Hindi and English and in regional languages through a syndicated feature service etc. A four page Biomedical Science magazine will be introduced soon on a regular basis. Publication of articles in newspapers through news syndicated service will also be started.
