The studies being conducted in the immunology lab are principally directed towards understanding the Immune mechanism responsible for autoimmune disease and infections diseases. An attempt is being made to delineate the cytokine profile and to characterize the liver antigen responsible for the experimental autoimmune Hepatitis. Besides this the molecular mechanism responsible for the Immunopathology of cerebral malaria are being studied in great developmental details.
The publishing of the complete genome sequence of several micro-organisms including Mycobacterium tuberculoris has opened up the opportunities for the discovery of the genes and mechanisms of virulence of pathogenic organisms, in addition to novel drug targets. In this direction, research is in progress o understand the polymorphism and expression profile of genes of the mammalian cell entry (mce) operon. Efforts are towards developing specific microarray in collaboration with CBT to monitor the modulation of genes during pathogeneris. These studies includes studies both in vivo animals models and in vitro studies with several clinical isolates with active collaboration with V. P. Chest Institute.
