The graduate program of ACBR provides an unparalleled opportunity for highly self-motivated independent minded young scholars to acquire superb academic training, while participating as colleagues in research of fundamental importance. Prospective students must have developed a commitment to a career in scientific research. Admissions to this program are granted on a Institute wide basis, rather than through a specific department or laboratory. New students are therefore, given an opportunity to explore the research opportunity before selecting their field of endeavor.
The program involves no fixed curriculum. Each student plays a major role is designing his/her own course of study. After discussions with the Director and other members of the faculty, each student prepares a tentative curriculum, which includes studies in progress, studies planned for the immediate future and the second academic year and a non general statement about overall plans for study and research.
This study plan is submitted in writing to the Director during the first year. A faculty advisory committee is then appointed and then these advisors discuss how the plan may be pursued through courses, tutorials, independent study, seminars and laboratory apprenticeship. Modification in this course of study may be made in consultation with the Committee and the Director.
Students usually spend the first two years in both academic work and the laboratory, and the remaining years predominantly pursuing their thesis research.
